- Nature’s Second Act: Remodeling with Beetle Kill Pine
Photos courtesy of Blue Pine Homes, www.bluepineconstruction.com When remodeling your home, selecting the right materials can strongly influence the aesthetic and overall feel of the space. One option that has gained popularity in recent years is beetle kill pine. This distinctive wood offers a unique blend of rustic charm and sustainable appeal, making it an excellent choice for various home remodeling projects. Here’s a closer look at this fascinating material, its benefits and imaginative ways to feature it in your remodeling projects. What Is Beetle Kill Pine? Aptly named, beetle kill pine, blue pine or blue stain pine all refer to pine trees that have been damaged by the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae), which plagues forests in the Western United States and Canada. The beetles burrow under the bark and lay their eggs, disrupting the flow of nutrients in the tree, which eventually causes it to die. As the tree decomposes, a blue or purple staining occurs in the wood, resulting in a striking visual appearance that’s highly sought after in the design world. Each piece of beetle kill pine carries a story of renewal, harvested from trees once left to wither in the forest, it’s transformed into something both sustainable and beautiful. The wood’s distinctive streaks and natural color variations make every project a unique expression of nature’s resilience. Why Choose Beetle Kill Pine? Unique Appearance: The distinct blue staining caused by the beetles gives this wood its identifiable appearance. The naturally occurring pattern of color variation gives each slat a one-of-a-kind character that’s difficult to replicate. Whether it’s a lighter or darker hue, the blue-tinted wood can add a subtle pop of color to your interior design. Sustainability: By using beetle kill pine, you’re helping to combat the environmental impact of the pine beetle infestation. Instead of leaving dead trees to decay, the wood is repurposed into beautiful and functional materials. This sustainable approach not only prevents waste and reduces forest decay but also lessens the need for newly cut lumber, making it a smart and eco-conscious choice for building and design. Durability: Despite the damage inflicted by beetles, the wood is still strong and durable. As a softwood, it’s relatively easy to work with, but it still holds up well in various applications. The inherent beauty of the wood is often complemented by its durability, making it a great choice for surfaces that are subject to wear and tear. Versatility: Beetle kill pine can be used in a variety of applications, both functional and decorative. Whether you want to use it for flooring, cabinetry, walls, or furniture, it provides a unique rustic charm that complements many interior styles, from contemporary to farmhouse. 10 Creative Uses for Beetle Kill Pine in Your Home Accent Walls and Paneling: One of the most popular uses of beetle kill pine is for creating stunning accent walls or paneling. The blue-stained wood can add texture and depth to your living room, bedroom or hallway. Whether you’re going for a cozy, rustic look or a more modern, industrial vibe, beetle kill pine will serve as a beautiful backdrop that adds visual interest. Cabinetry: If you’re remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, consider using beetle kill pine for your cabinets. The wood’s natural coloring and grain pattern can bring warmth and character to your space. Pair it with modern hardware and sleek countertops for a striking contrast, or opt for a more rustic finish for a homier look. Countertops: Beetle kill pine can also be transformed into unique, one-of-a-kind countertops. The swirling blue streaks paired with a polished or live-edge finish create a natural focal point in kitchens, bathrooms or even bar tops. A protective sealant ensures durability while allowing the character of the wood to shine through. Flooring: Beetle kill pine flooring adds a natural, organic look to your home. The wood’s distinctive color variations give each plank a unique character, making it an excellent choice for a one-of-a-kind floor. Whether you’re updating a living room, entryway or dining area, this will provide a sturdy and attractive foundation. Furniture: Custom furniture pieces made from beetle kill pine are a great way to showcase this wood’s beauty. Consider building a coffee table, dining table or bookshelf with this sustainable wood. The striking blue tones make it a conversation starter while adding a touch of nature to your interior. Beams and Ceilings: For homes with vaulted ceilings or open floor plans, beetle kill pine beams can make a stunning architectural statement. The rich, varied hues of the wood can add a sense of depth and rustic appeal to your ceilings or exposed beam structures, creating an inviting and warm atmosphere in the room. Plank Ceilings: Covering an entire ceiling with beetle kill pine planks can transform a space instantly. Whether in a great room, bedroom or covered porch, the distinctive coloring of the wood creates an eye-catching overhead surface that feels both cozy and refined. This treatment pairs beautifully with recessed lighting or exposed beams for an elevated finish. Doors and Trim: Incorporating beetle kill pine into doors, window trim or baseboards is another way to bring the beauty of this wood into your space. Whether used in a traditional or contemporary setting, beetle kill pine trim offers a natural, elegant finish that can complement a variety of design styles. Staircases and Railings: Using beetle kill pine for stair treads, risers or handrails adds a dramatic touch to transitional spaces in your home. The wood’s unique streaking creates visual movement, turning a functional element into an architectural focal point. Built-Ins and Shelving: From entertainment centers and bookcases to mudroom storage, beetle kill pine brings both durability and natural charm to built-in designs. Its color variations add dimension to shelving and storage solutions, blending practicality with standout style. Beetle kill pine brings a versatile style to any remodel, from walls and cabinetry to floors, furniture and ceilings. A material born of resilience, this wood transforms loss into lasting beauty.
- Panoramic Perfection: Crafting a Luxury Home in Grand Junction
photos by Robin Bouricius For those of us in Colorado, it’s not hard to understand the appeal of the state. Natural splendor is never too far away and stunning vistas are plentiful. The Front Range has been a draw for many, offering the benefits of urban living with reasonable access to mountain adventures. But those looking to immerse themselves even further in Colorado’s rugged charm often look farther west. On the state’s western slope, in the outskirts of Grand Junction, Stone Cliff Views offers exactly this. The 5,000-square-foot custom-built luxury home is a hop and a skip from the iconic Colorado River, and the red rock cliffs of Colorado National Monument tower above. The location alone is enough to inspire awe, with expansive vistas and easy access to the often-overlooked national monument, but the home is a wonder unto itself. Part of a new development in the area, Stone Cliff Views was meticulously crafted to incorporate the beauty of the surrounding area while maintaining the highest standards of modern luxury. The home wraps around an in-ground pool with an attached jacuzzi and a nearby gas-operated fire pit. Pass-through windows along the patio space allow for a seamless meshing of the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. A nine-car garage provides ample space for practical, everyday vehicles as well as off-road adventure toys, which are sure to be useful on the extensive network of 4x4 roads in the area. Beyond practical spaces for automobiles and ATVs, the home also includes areas designed for quiet elegance and leisure. A hallway library with a rolling ladder lends an element of refined sophistication. It’s all designed to be the picture of modern luxury living, but the centerpiece of Stone Cliff Views is the kitchen. “The client really loves modern farmhouses and I wanted to merge farmhouse with modern and traditional elements,” says Kyle Renstrom of Benchmark Construction, the team responsible for building the home. Engineered hardwood floors lay the foundation for the open-concept kitchen, where a large island separates the dining area and living room space. A brilliant white quartz countertop on the island offers durability and easy cleaning, and helps to keep the space vibrant and filled with natural light. Elsewhere in the kitchen, black quartz countertops create a sense of juxtaposition while maintaining the robust features. An operating marble backsplash separates the kitchen’s cooking area from the adjacent butler’s pantry, rising and lowering to either open the space further or manage mess while cooking. This element, says Kyle, was the most challenging part of the entire project, requiring coordination with multiple subcontractors to create something reliable and safe. “The operating backsplash between the kitchen and pantry created the perfect catering setup for large parties, allowing the client to either fully close off the pantry for a streamlined look or leave it open to provide visibility into the space,” he explains. Below this incredibly unique feature is the 48-inch Dual-Fuel Range from Signature Kitchen Suite. The three ultra-high burners of the range are capable of outputting up to 23,000 BTUs, while the three ultra-low burners provide simmering temperatures as low as 100 degrees for the preparation of delicate sauces and sugary confections. A built-in wok grate can accommodate round-bottomed cookware, allowing for professional-quality stir-frying at home. Rounding out the features of the cooktop is an electric-operated chrome griddle that delivers even heating across its entire surface. The range sits atop dual ovens, also from Signature Kitchen Suite. The smaller 18-inch oven utilizes both steam and convection heating, ensuring food cooks quickly and evenly while maintaining the perfect texture. The neighboring 30-inch oven features a rear heating element and ProHeat convection technology that quickly and evenly heats food. Signature Kitchen Suite’s 48-inch French door refrigerator provides the kitchen with 26 cubic feet of total storage space. The fridge’s convertible fridge/freezer drawers offer five preset temperature zones, ranging from full freeze to wine chilling. Of course, it wouldn’t be a modern appliance without app integration, allowing temperatures to be monitored and settings adjusted on the fly from a smartphone. A Signature Kitchen Suite countertop microwave was installed in the kitchen’s cabinetry. The model has 2 cubic feet of capacity and a smart inverter that provides even cooking and defrosting. Smooth-touch glass controls give it a refined and modern look. To be certain, they had enough cooking options for large family parties, the butler’s pantry contains an additional double wall oven with similar features to the dual ovens of the kitchen, though stacked vertically. Signature Kitchen Suite dishwashers have been installed in both the kitchen and butler’s pantry, ensuring plenty of capacity even when both spaces are in use. “I approached this project with entertaining in mind,” says Kyle. It’s easy to imagine dozens of people socializing in the resort-like space surrounded by gorgeous views. “I wanted to honor the client's love of a modern farmhouse and also wanted the home to reflect the client's personal taste,” he says. “With some guidance from the client on likes and dislikes, I was able to move the design in a direction I knew reflected his taste.” Stone Cliff Views is more than a home; it’s a celebration of Colorado’s natural beauty paired with thoughtful, modern design. Every element, from the open-concept kitchen to the seamless indoor-outdoor spaces, was created with both luxury and livability in mind. With sweeping vistas, professional-grade appliances and spaces made for entertaining, the home reflects the client’s vision while honoring the surrounding landscape, proving that the right design can elevate both lifestyle and experience. Benchmark is Western Colorado’s premier custom home builder, renowned for crafting exceptional residences that reflect both the landscape and the lifestyle of the Grand Junction area. With over 30 years of hands-on experience, the team has developed an intimate understanding of the region, its terrain, climate and architectural character. - Cooking Up New Beginnings
Through loss and transition, the Ketzers created a bright, open space where family and friends gather to cook, celebrate and heal. Remodeling a living space is a big undertaking, even under the best circumstances. Plans rarely unfold perfectly; there are often delays, permit hurdles or supply challenges that most homeowners come to expect. For Jill and Lucas Ketzer, however, their remodeling journey began during an especially tender time: the unexpected loss of Jill’s father. “We were talking about it for years and were finally going to start the process, but my dad passed unexpectedly and I didn’t have the bandwidth to ‘deal’ with the kitchen remodel until I had settled everything related to my dad’s estate,” explains Jill. Balancing the responsibilities of settling her father’s estate while carrying the weight of loss was no small task. Yet, with patience and determination, Jill found her way forward, turning a season of hardship into an opportunity to create something meaningful and lasting. “Once I had [the estate] taken care of, we started the ball rolling on the kitchen,” she says. “We did not want the kitchen to be in shambles for the holidays because we love to cook and host.” With a renewed sense of purpose, the Ketzers began demo work on their existing kitchen, chasing their goal of having their remodel done in time for the holidays. They have lived in their home in the Green Mountain neighborhood for more than a decade, but had never been happy with the layout of the main living area, says Jill, which consisted of a kitchen, dining room and front room all separated from one another. Jill says they hardly ever use the front room, making it a total waste of space. “We wanted more storage space, we wanted the kitchen to be bigger, brighter and more open,” says Jill. “We wanted to take the walls down to open the whole level up and make our kitchen bigger. We love to cook and entertain, so we just wanted a better space because we spend so much time in the kitchen.” The Ketzers enlisted the help of Jacquiline Durant of Caruso Kitchens and got to work revitalizing their living space. Opening up the home’s main level offered the Ketzers a blank slate. Their home features an impressive garden and greenhouse, and the design of the new kitchen brings that organic vibrancy indoors. A modern take on a farmhouse style, the verdant interior is dotted with house plants, their greenery spilling over floating shelves and complementing the soft green cabinetry. “I think this style fits well because we like a more simple, rustic aesthetic and I think that the lighter hues of the look, help brighten the kitchen, which we wanted,” says Jill. Accentuating the organic feel of the remodel are the scallop-patterned backsplashes, which add a distinctive and playful flourish. Vinyl plank flooring gives the feeling of weathered floorboards with much greater resiliency and none of the splinters, a look juxtaposed by the clean, modern practicality of veined quartz countertops. The central island features a dedicated prep station, a sink paired with a built-in butcher block countertop. For added convenience and effortless cleanup, the Monogram Statement fully integrated dishwasher sits just across from the island, perfectly within reach. This combination creates a perfect space for meal prep, while keeping messes contained and cleanup quick and easy. A central idea behind the remodel was to create an open and comfortable space for friends and family to gather. To support the Ketzers’ love of hosting, the new kitchen features three separate ovens. Beneath the Monogram 36-inch induction cooktop, which features five induction heating elements, the Monogram 30-inch Statement Single Wall Oven is set up to do the bulk of the work. The oven features a sleek LCD control screen and a host of smart features, such as the ability to set cooking times and temperatures simply by scanning the barcode of a packaged food. Additionally, the oven offers no-preheat air frying capability among a wealth of other features. A secondary Monogram 30-inch Statement five-in-one wall oven offers exceptional flexibility and cooking results, serving as a smaller-capacity option when the larger oven is in use. Enhanced with Advantium® technology, this innovative oven can function as a convection oven, toaster oven, warming/proofing oven, precision cook oven, and microwave, making it a versatile tool for any culinary task. Above it sits the kitchen’s third oven: the Monogram 30-inch Hearth Oven, dedicated specifically to pizzas. “We make a lot of pizzas, and it is, very much, a fun centerpiece for when we entertain,” says Jill. “The first night our ovens were installed, we made pizza in our pizza oven and had friends over.” After working through the grief of losing her father and the challenge of reimagining the family’s living space, the Ketzers’ kitchen is now a joyous setting for family and community. Jill says she is beyond delighted with how it all turned out. “I still look at the kitchen and can’t believe that it’s mine!” she says. “It just makes me happy!” Not long after completing the remodel, Jill says the family hosted an 18-person Thanksgiving dinner. On the occasion of that first pizza dinner with friends, the Ketzers popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate, and the cork has been framed and is now part of the kitchen’s decor, says Jill. Grief may never fully disappear, but it gently makes room for life to grow around it, and the Ketzers’ new kitchen will surely be a place where joy, togetherness, and new memories can flourish. - Building at 9,700 Feet: A Twin Lakes Mountain Retreat
Through delays, design challenges and the demands of high-altitude living, one couple created a kitchen that balances rugged Colorado surroundings with contemporary comfort. When it comes to remodeling, choosing elements that match the existing style and feel of a home can be a challenge. New construction avoids this issue, offering a blank canvas, but it comes with its own set of challenges. Building often unfolds gradually, offering chances to refine decisions and overcome obstacles. For Syd Pohl, constructing a second home high in the Colorado mountains demonstrated both the boundless possibilities of a fresh start and the drawn-out frustration that comes with it. “The design phase of our house took about two years, and the actual construction also took about two years,” explains Syd, a timeframe that reflects a six-month delay due to issues with pouring the concrete for the building’s foundation. The house sits in the high Rockies at an elevation of 9,700 feet in the Twin Lakes area. It’s just down the road from Leadville, a town that holds the record as the highest incorporated city in the United States. That elevation presented its own issues, leading to a change in plans for the home’s flooring late in the design/construction process, due to concerns about material stability in the intense high-elevation sunlight. Despite all this, Syd was intimately involved throughout the entire process. “During the design phase, we met with [the builder and designer] about every two to three weeks. Once construction began, I took a monthly trip to the site to see the progress and work through any potential issues.” One such issue related to the choice of appliances Syd intended to incorporate into the home’s kitchen. Initially, Syd says they wanted to use a suite of GE Profile appliances, but they learned that GE would not provide warranty service to the area due to its remote location. Instead, Syd went with KitchenAid. A 36-inch, five-burner, gas cooktop installed in the kitchen’s Istanbul granite countertops features 19,000 BTU multiflame burners as well as a 5,000 BTU simmer burner. The smaller burner utilizes a diffuser plate for precise simmering and melting at lower temperatures. The kitchen’s 30-inch double wall oven comes with interchangeable attachments that enable it to be used for grilling, steaming, or adapted for a cooking stone. The attachments plug into a provided heating element and base pan, and can be easily swapped out as needed. It can all be operated through the KitchenAid mobile app. Below the double ovens, a 30-inch slow cook warming drawer brings the capabilities of both a bread maker and a slow cooker. A 24-inch under-counter microwave rounds out the kitchen’s heating elements. With 1.2 cubic feet of capacity and 950 watts of cooking power, the microwave can quickly cook or defrost whatever is placed inside. The 36-inch French door refrigerator provides 26.8 cubic feet of storage capacity, including a full-width pantry drawer that can optimize temperature and airflow as needed. The kitchen incorporates not one, but two KitchenAid dishwashers. Internal sensors measure soil levels and adapt wash cycles as needed, and at just 39 dBA, the model is KitchenAid’s quietest dishwasher ever. Both were installed with wood paneling to match the kitchen’s custom, Amish-made cherry cabinets. All of the elements come together into a style Syd describes as “Colorado contemporary.” “We wanted a style that matches the surroundings,” says Syd. “A mountain retreat for family and friends to enjoy with us.” Bringing it all to life took dedication and patience, but in the end, it was all worth it. The gorgeous interior of this mountain home opens to views of the nearby Mount Elbert and Mount Massive, the two highest peaks in the state. “I was on site for the final four months of construction, as I did almost all of the interior trim work on the house,” says Syd. “As a result, I helped install all the cabinets in the house and was here for the countertop and backsplash installation. The finished Kitchen exceeds our expectations.” In the end, Syd’s mountain home became more than just a second residence; it’s a reflection of perseverance, craftsmanship, and the joy of bringing a vision to life. The process may have taken years and demanded hands-on dedication, but the result is a kitchen and home that harmonize with the landscape while offering the warmth and functionality needed for gathering family and friends. Set against the backdrop of Colorado’s highest peaks, it’s proof that with patience and care, building at new heights can deliver something truly extraordinary. Saunders Company has been building homes since 1979, when Leadville was booming with over 3000 miners employed underground at the Climax and Black Cloud mines. Three years later, the mines were closing and housing demand dropped like a bucket of lead. Their focus then transitioned towards mountain vacation homes as Leadville, Twin Lakes and the surrounding area were being discovered for both their majestic mountain scenery and easy accessibility to outdoor recreational adventures. Today, clients are both vacation home owners from all over the USA as well as full-time residents. We build traditional frame homes, timber frame homes and log homes. Floor plans have ranged from 900 square feet to over 7500 square feet. ldvbuilder@gmail.com #TwinLakes
- Sculpted by Nature, Shaped by Design
How a love for the outdoors shaped a kitchen remodel that is as functional as it is breathtaking. A beautiful kitchen is a work of art. Entering a space that truly takes your breath away with its beauty, one can’t help but think about the intention behind it. Crafting a unique and inspiring space takes artisanship and vision, just as any work of art would. When Bill and Janet Bathurst decided to reimagine their kitchen, they knew they wanted to transform the space into just such a thing. To accomplish this lofty feat, the Bathursts enlisted the help of Kaitlyn Bumgarner of VL Builders to create a kitchen in what the designer describes as a “transitional craftsman” style. “Bill and Janet approached me with a goal of refreshing a 20-year-old kitchen that they have loved and used, keeping with a nature-inspired look without losing uniqueness,” says Kaitlyn. “I learned through conversation that they loved cherry wood and unique stones and accents. One goal was to tie into their custom island pendants, which reflected fish swimming through a stream.” The Bathursts’ home sits in a cul-de-sac on the western fringe of the metro area, with a direct view of the nearby lake. Undeveloped natural areas surround the home, and bringing the feeling of that untamed space indoors in a way that still felt refined and elegant would require a delicate balance. “We have always tried to bring nature and water themes into our home,” says Bill. “We focused on nature and tried hard to bring that into our home.” Natural stained cherry wood cabinets and earth-toned imported granite countertops nailed the feeling the Bathursts were looking for, creating a comforting, outdoorsy vibe. A custom granite backsplash carved into a mountain scene sits behind the cooktop, adding to the rustic feel, as if sculpted by nature. “Bill and Janet have a lovely backyard and garden full of sweat, love, and determination. A truly prized space that comes to life differently through each season,” says Kaitlyn. “From the first meeting, I could tell they have a passion for nature and enjoying it.” Central to the remodel was a desire for a more efficient use of the hard-to-reach areas of the kitchen, and that included installing glass doors along the top row of the kitchen’s cabinetry. This simple choice transformed the otherwise inaccessible and underutilized area into a display space, imbuing the kitchen with the feeling of an art gallery. The stunning, hand-blown glass light fixtures hanging over the kitchen island only deepen this feeling. Beauty is one thing, but a kitchen with a stunning aesthetic would be nothing without functionality. On that front, the Bathursts decided to install a suite of Miele appliances, chosen because of their satisfaction with the brand during a previous project. A sleek, obsidian black convection wall oven, featuring a large touch display and a proximity sensor that automatically activates the oven light when someone approaches, serves as the centerpiece appliance. The oven has a plethora of novel features for expert baking and roasting, including an internal camera that can be accessed with a smartphone via the Miele app. The larger oven is paired with the 30-inch compact speed oven, which features a dedicated internal temperature probe, a variety of specialty baking modes, and microwave capabilities. The Bathursts selected a 36-inch induction cooktop crowned by Miele’s innovative Shape wall hood in obsidian black. Designed with an angled profile for added headroom, the hood combines form and function seamlessly. The look is completed by the one-of-a-kind granite backsplash, carved into the silhouette of a mountain range. A spacious Miele panel-ready built-in refrigerator and freezer provide the kitchen with 25 cubic feet of food storage, featuring multiple temperature zones and push-to-open doors. Both utilize color touch displays, ensuring easy monitoring of internal temperatures. Cherry wood panels on the door allow the refrigerator to blend elegantly into the surrounding cabinetry. Rounding out the stylish Miele appliances is an AutoDos dishwasher. The dishwasher’s interior features a versatile configuration that accommodates a variety of specialty dishes. The model also features a shortened and intensified wash cycle that can have dishes cleaned in under an hour, as well as an automatically opening door to assist in drying when the cycle is complete. The kitchen evokes the charm of an artist’s retreat in the woods, where the energy of the natural world flows effortlessly indoors. It is art, but it is also a home. It is cozy, yet classic in its beauty. “This kitchen can stand the test of time in both function and beauty,” says Kaitlyn. “How can you not enjoy a cup of coffee while sitting at a window overlooking mountains and water, or seeing your hard work come to life over the seasons below you with blooming roses, sprouting peas and fish swimming in the ponds?” VL Builders , based in Lakewood, CO, is a design-build residential remodel company dedicated to creating custom kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and whole-home transformations. - Parker Perfection: Embracing Contemporary Design
By DJ Reetz , Photos by Tommy Rhyan - Rhyan Productions Sometimes the best course of action to create something that feels brand new is to reimagine what you already have. For Mike and Shannon Fronapfel, the desire to add a fresh feel to their home led them to a sleek, modern update that completely transformed their living space. The Fronapfels had paid off the mortgage on their home in Parker, a picturesque exurb southeast of the Denver metro area, and were ready for something new. Rather than pulling up the roots they had established over all those years, selling the home, and buying something else, they decided a reimagining was in order. And with the help of designer Jenn Lowry of JL Interior Design, the Fronapfels created a stunning contemporary aesthetic for their home. Jenn describes the new design as modern transitional, incorporating a sleek, clean color scheme and eye-catching accents. White quartz countertops accentuated with gray veining make up the surface area of the new kitchen, establishing the crisp, modern vibe. Cream colored cabinetry around the perimeter of the kitchen juxtaposes with the dark grey features incorporated into the kitchen’s island, and brushed steel mosaic backsplashes add an understated flair. “The overall two-tone aesthetics is a beautiful color match to the mosaic stainless backsplash,” says Jenn of the design choice. It’s a strikingly modern look that is sure to age gracefully. Central to the remodel is the Dual Fuel Range from KitchenAid. Mike says a gas stove was a must for the new kitchen, and this model combines the raw power of a gas range with the consistency of an electric convection oven. The front burners put out up to 20,000 BTUs, ensuring a professional-quality experience on the cook top, while the built-in smart appliance features allow for the oven to be set and preheated remotely through the KitchenAid app or a connected smart device. Oven settings can even be saved for seamless future use. The kitchen’s smudge-resistant black stainless-steel fridge, also from KitchenAid, fits the two-tone aesthetic perfectly, adding to the crisp overall look of the space. A wealth of independent storage areas inside the refrigerator help to keep a variety of different perishables at the perfect temperature and humidity while preventing cross contamination of odors and flavors. A programmable water dispenser allows for automatic dispensation of specific amounts in ounces, cups or liters — no more holding a water bottle while waiting for it to fill. Rounding out the set of KitchenAid appliances is a three-rack dishwasher in matching smudge-resistant black stainless steel. The dishwasher features a microfiltration system and sensors that continually monitor soil levels during wash cycles, adjusting wash time and water temperature to ensure dishes always come out sparkling clean, no matter how dirty they are going in. The dishwasher features a deep, angled third rack that can accommodate most standard sized drinking glasses or bowls, and a drying bar to wick away moisture for a spotless finish. The kitchen island, covered in the stunning yet demure veined quartz, contains a number of notable additions as well. The island features a roll-out trash can, discreet built-in drawer microwave and plenty of storage for pots and pans; all features Jenn says were lacking in the kitchen’s previous layout. An additional bar and beverage area adds space for entertaining or a quick lunch, and Jenn says she was extra mindful in designing the feature so that it wouldn’t interfere with the foot traffic or overall flow of the kitchen. For the floor, the Fronapfels decided on luxury vinyl plank flooring. This option provides the kitchen with the timeless look of hardwood without compromising durability or ease of cleaning — and it won’t break the bank either. All the elements of the kitchen come together to create a homey yet refined space, one that nails the vibe of modernism without feeling fleeting. Mike says the couple loves how it all turned out, and the redesign exceeded their expectations. When asked how they plan to utilize this new space, Mike answers enthusiastically: “More guests and house parties!” And what’s the key to such a successful project? Both Mike and Jenn have similar answers. “Find a good contractor that does quality work and is a good communicator,” says Mike. “Good communication is key!” says Jenn. “I really enjoyed the entire process in working together with the client and general contractor.” Those who hope to have a similar outcome to their own remodel, one defined by met or exceeded expectations rather than regret and displeasure, might want to take note: make sure you are communicating your desires and that those desires are being listened to and taken seriously. jlinteriordesign.net • 303-228-7081 JL Interior Design’s philosophy is providing service to clients on any budget! - The Wright Way: The Kitchen That Has It All (Even for Dogs)
photos by Robin Bouricius What’s the difference between a house and a home? A house is a simple noun, a place, a structure. But a home is harder to define, tied more to a feeling. A home is a place of spirit and soul, a vessel for the human expression of those who live within it. A house is empty and indifferent — but a home contains life. For Drew and Lori Wright, remodeling the kitchen of their Centennial home presented a chance to do something special. The couple wanted to create something unique, to transform their suburban house into something totally their own. To do that, they enlisted the talents of Terrina Reiber of Deay Studio. “At Deay Studio we believe that great design tells a story — your story,” says Terrina. “We don’t do cookie-cutter. Every project is a collaboration, tailored to you, ensuring that no two spaces are ever the same.” Terrina founded Deay Studio in 2020, the culmination of a decades-long passion for design and home improvement, and brought her fresh takes to the Wrights’ remodel with laser focus. “The homeowners had a laundry list of issues with their existing kitchen, so the design was tailored to solve those pain points while creating a space that fits their lifestyle,” she says. “Every design choice was intentional, solving their practical concerns while enhancing the overall feel of the home.” Bringing the project together creatively and uniquely presented some challenges, however. In particular, a load-bearing wall puts limitations on the space that could not be avoided. The solution: partitioning off the area on the other side of the wall as a scullery that is separated from the main kitchen both physically and stylistically. “The kitchen is a timeless blend of classic white cabinetry and warm white oak accents, designed to feel both natural and perfect for entertaining,” explains Terrina. “The adjoining scullery is accented in a vibrant shade of blue, offering a fun yet functional touch that makes it a standout feature.” While the white quartz countertops and backsplashes of the kitchen gleam incandescently, the scullery has a funkier feel with its soothing blue motif and eye-catching wallpaper. To keep these disparate spaces from clashing, the scullery’s entry is camouflaged behind cabinet doors that flank the kitchen’s cooktop. But while it is well hidden, the scullery offers plenty of pantry space, as well as a high-powered dishwasher. The Wright’s list of key priorities for the remodel included a spacious fridge, and for that, they settled on a 48-inch French door refrigerator by Dacor. Equipped with panels to match the surrounding cabinetry, the fridge features dual ice makers with whiskey ball ice, an auto-fill pitcher to ensure filtered water is always on hand, and a freshzone compartment that can swap between freezer or fridge temps depending on demand. The 36-inch gas cooktop, also by Dacor, kicks out 19,000 BTUs with its dual-valve simmer-sear burners. Continuous grates allow pots to be slid easily across the cooktop, and a Bluetooth-connected hood can automatically adjust ventilation as needed. Rounding out the suite of Dacor appliances in this unique kitchen, the 30-inch combination wall oven is ready for just about anything the Wrights could throw at it. The upper oven’s multifunctional speed settings combine the power of a microwave with convection technology that allows for searing, broiling and even air frying. The lower oven’s steam assist ensures baked goods are moist and meats are juicy, and, of course, the whole thing connects to Dacor’s SmartThings app, allowing for remote monitoring and operation from a smartphone. “Dacor’s appliances are known for their precision and performance, which makes them ideal for a space designed for both everyday use and entertaining,” says Terrina. “The brand’s modern aesthetic also complements the overall design, ensuring that the appliances seamlessly integrate into the kitchen’s clean, sophisticated look.” “For the furry family members, we created a dedicated watering station, ensuring that the space works for everyone—human and canine alike.” But there’s one more truly unique aspect of the kitchen that Terrina loves to draw attention to. “For the furry family members, we created a dedicated watering station, ensuring that the space works for everyone—human and canine alike,” she says. Looking at the kitchen in its totality, it truly is one of the more unique and personalized remodels around. It’s something that can only come about when a designer is deeply engaged in the project, listening and collaborating with the homeowners. “There are so many highlights in this remodeled kitchen, but what stands out most to me is the way all the personalized details came together to make the space truly their own. From the stunning showcase island to the playful blue accents, every element reflects their unique style and needs,” says Terrina. “It’s the little touches, like the dedicated watering station for their dogs, that make this kitchen not only beautiful but also functional and truly personal to them.” The Wrights are certain to get plenty of use out of their new space, and for Terrina, the project will be something she will be showing off to demonstrate her abilities as a designer. “We collaborated closely from start to finish, which made the design come to life in such a meaningful way. They had a clear vision for what they wanted, but they also trusted me to bring in creative solutions. The open communication and their willingness to share their thoughts and ideas made for a very smooth and enjoyable project,” she says. “I’m extremely proud of the final outcome of this remodel — it’s definitely one of my favorite projects to date. I still brag to other designers and contractors how everything came together so seamlessly.” Deay Studio , founded in 2020, is dedicated to creating bespoke interior design and design-build solutions that tell each client’s unique story. - A Recipe for the Good Life
Rustic wood, sleek steel and wide-open spaces make this kitchen irresistible. photos by Robin Bouricius and Peter Nosbisch When most people think of Colorado, they think of mountains. Towering jags of granite cutting into the clear, blue sky, dusted in snow and surrounded by forests of pine and aspen. It’s an image that draws many to the state, but one that neglects the half of the state that doesn’t resemble this at all: the vast, rolling plains. In Fort Lupton, one finds a different vision of Colorado. Here, grasslands stretch to the horizon, parceled into farmland dotted with the odd oil derrick or fracking well. The mountains are a muted silhouette that can disappear into the haze when the weather is right. It’s not the stereotypical Colorado, but the quiet, rural lifestyle here draws those who may not be interested in the buzzing urban core or rugged mountain terrain. There’s a certain freedom that those vast, open skies convey and for Martin and Angie Barron, it represented the freedom to build a dream home from scratch, including their ideal kitchen. “Our goal was to create a functional space that feels both modern and inviting,” says designer Gaby Carillo of RoCa Remodeling & Design. “Since the homeowners love to cook, we designed a smooth workflow with ample storage solutions, including a hidden full-size pantry for added convenience.” Gaby created a modern farmhouse design for the Barrons’ kitchen; part of a home built on a lot along a county road on the edge of Fort Lupton. The area has a distinctly rural feel, but the kitchen yields a shining modernity. Marbled quartz countertops and matching backsplashes help to keep the space clean and bright, while Maplewood cabinetry and hardwood floors preserve a charming, rustic feel. But the cozy farmhouse vibe meets modern sensibilities with the kitchen’s suite of sleek Dacor appliances. “The high quality and beautiful finish [of the appliances] contrasts beautifully with the wood cabinetry,” says Gaby. The 48-inch French door refrigerator with stainless graphite exterior boldly announces itself in the space. The fridge offers nearly 30 cubic feet of storage, full-width storage drawers for delicate foods and a compartment that can be converted between freezer and fridge space as needed. A built-in water pitcher ensures that there’s always cool, filtered water on hand and has the option for flavor infusions. A dual icemaker keeps standard cubes stocked as well as spheres designed to melt slowly in fancy cocktails. The matching stainless graphite of the 36-inch gas range only furthers the modern elegance on display. Capable of outputting heat ranging between 22,000 and 750 BTUs, the six-burner range can handle anything a modern kitchen might need with its distinctive brass burners and illuminated knobs. An auto-connected hood utilizes temperature sensors to ramp up ventilation as necessary. The 30-inch combination wall oven gives the kitchen the dual capacity of convection baking and microwaving. The oven’s steam assist feature ensures that roasts are juicy and artisan bread comes out with the perfect texture. The LCD screen can even offer meal prep advice right on the oven, and the app incorporation gives the option of preheating, checking oven temperatures and managing cook times remotely. The 24-inch Dacor dishwasher provides powerful cleaning while maintaining library-level quiet thanks to its frictionless motor and insulated stainless-steel tub. The high-efficiency model cuts down on water usage and keeps energy costs low without sacrificing ability, and, of course, can be operated remotely through Dacor’s SmartThings app. The new home represents a fresh start. It’s a blank canvas onto which the Barrons can paint their dreams and Gaby says that designing the kitchen with the couple was a breeze. “Collaborating with Martin and Angie was a true pleasure,” she says. “Their industry expertise and thoughtful approach made the process seamless, while their energy and enthusiasm made the experience both enjoyable and inspiring.” From brass burners to marbled quartz, the Barrons’ kitchen proves that life on the plains can be just as stylish, and just as delicious, as life in the mountains. Modern appliances, rustic charm and wide-open skies come together in a space made for cooking, gathering and dreaming big. - Castle Rock’s Crown Jewel: A Kitchen Bathed in Light and Luxury
photos by Robin Bouricius It’s easy enough to understand what attracts people to Colorado. The state’s largest population centers exist within easy reach of breathtaking natural splendor. Rugged, snowcapped mountains serve as the backdrop to sweeping vistas. The call of adventure looms at every glance, as does the promise of peace and the serene beauty of the natural world. The rapid growth of the town of Castle Rock is undoubtedly tied to the draw of the state’s beauty. Far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the Denver metro area to avoid designation as a suburb, the town is nestled amongst rolling hills dappled with pine trees and scrub oak. Flanked on one side by the rocky buttes that produce the iconic formation from which the town derives its name, one would be hard-pressed to find a better place to create a bucolic Colorado life than Castle Rock. Homeowner Bryan McKim had just such an opportunity. With a newly built home on a lot carved out of a gentle hillside, Bryan had a blank canvas. “Make it your own space, sometimes less is more,” he advises. “Go dramatic or simple, but make it your own space that will lend to your lifestyle.” For Bryan, creating a unique kitchen space meant enlisting the help of Hazel Atwood of Zelah Designs, who has been nursing a passion for interior design since childhood. “Design has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember,” she says, having helped her parents create unique spaces in the houses they flipped professionally. “It was during those early experiences that I realized my calling was in interior design.” "Go dramatic or simple, but make it your own space that will lend to your lifestyle." Bryan wanted something contemporary with a clean look that would benefit from the wealth of natural light and provide plenty of countertop and pantry space. With Hazel’s help, Bryan settled on a style they call “mountain modern” that would bring together the crispness and functionality of a modern kitchen with rugged earthiness. “For me, design is about capturing the true essence of a space. I don’t just create for the sake of aesthetics; I believe in blending beauty with function,” says Hazel. “I see design as an extension of one’s soul — a way to express individuality while making a lasting investment in your home. It’s about creating spaces that are timeless, meaningful, and, most importantly, authentic to the people who inhabit them.” Taj Mahal quartzite countertops, rough quartzite tile backsplashes, and variable-length white oak flooring lay the foundation for a space that Hazel describes as neither too warm nor too cool. “I wanted to curate a design that’s simple yet complex in multiple finishes. Clean yet homey and functional,” she says. She was hoping to create something that would accommodate any furniture the homeowners already had, giving them confidence in any choices they might make themselves in the future. Intentionally avoiding “builder grade” tile, the rough quartzite backsplashes help set the design apart from the drab uniformity of many modern kitchens. “Almost every single tile in this home has a unique look to it,” says Hazel. For the kitchen appliances, Bryan was drawn to the look and functionality of JennAir. The 36-inch French door refrigerator fits the space requirements perfectly, with stainless steel panels sitting flush with the neighboring cabinets. A dramatic obsidian interior houses perishables on sleek glass shelves, kept at the perfect temperature thanks to the trademarked precision temperature management system. A 36-inch, six-burner gas rangetop adds further robust functionality to the space, with cast iron grates and dual-stacked power burners capable of up to 20,000 BTUs. The control knobs feature an LED accent, giving a soft halo effect when a burner is lit. Above the rangetop sits a custom-built hood with gorgeous walnut trim, matching the floating shelves. Of course, a professional quality rangetop isn’t enough to make a functional kitchen. Rounding out the cooking appliances are a 30-inch double wall oven and an under-counter microwave. The oven’s multimodal convection system and built-in heat probe ensure consistent, even baking and roasting, while the 24-inch microwave nestles seamlessly into the kitchen island. For cleanup, the 24-inch RISE dishwasher sits opposite the dual ovens in the kitchen’s island. The whisper-quiet dishwasher features 11 percent more loading height and a dedicated top rack for cutlery. A rapid wash cycle can have any mess back to sparkling in about an hour. The knurled details of the appliances add what Hazel describes as a slight industrial feel, without overpowering the rest of the design. The kitchen is something truly unique, filled with natural light thanks to the breathtaking window arrays on either side of the space. Bryan says he loves the simplicity of the colors and the overall flow of the project. “Working with Hazel was very constructive,” he says. “She’s a great communicator, and she had so many options and was very patient with our decisions.” Zelah Designs We are committed to dedicating our utmost effort to every endeavor, as we take great pride in our work. - Taking the Plunge: Transforming a Forgotten Lap Pool Into a Dream Kitchen
photos by Robin Bouricius (above) and Phil Wegener Photography The importance of a knowledgeable designer during a major remodel can’t be overstated. Upending your life and home is daunting enough to begin with; creating a vision for what comes next and then executing that vision requires skill and experience. When Roberta and Ira Gross planned a major remodel of their Highlands Ranch home, they knew they would need the assistance of a professional. A lap pool put in during a prior remodel by the home’s previous owner was going unused and creating a host of other potential issues with moisture and mold, and the Grosses knew they could transform it from a liability into a luxury. The area was dark and cramped, begging for a bright reimagining. The couple was referred to architect Doug Walter, a veteran home designer with over 45 years of experience and dozens of local and national awards for his work. “Having a professional to tailor your space for your needs and desires and who can make recommendations you might not have considered is important,” says Roberta. Doug got to work doing what he does, creating a comprehensive vision that would completely transform the Gross home. “This was 90% my concept,” says Doug. “We didn't go visit a kitchen showroom until it was all laid out and elevations drawn.” It’s not an easy process, and the Grosses knew a massive transformation would take time. “It took about 4 months of design work before we were awarded a contract for construction,” says Doug. “Then during construction, I met with them weekly, and the contractor, to iron out challenges that inevitably arise.” Doug cobbled together a timeless transitional look that would bring light and vibrancy into the space. The remodel expanded the living space, created dedicated dining and sitting rooms, and doubled the size of the kitchen. “The pool, by the way, is still there,” says Doug. “But it’s now a crawl space.” PentalQuartz countertops and matching backsplashes throughout most of the kitchen amplify the brightness provided by a new skylight. The addition of a coffee bar (a must-have for Ira) utilizes a stunning clipped diamond marble mosaic backsplash. A combination of painted and hickory cabinets, as well as oakwood floors, was chosen to match the home’s existing aesthetic. The Grosses decided on JennAir appliances after falling in love with their sleek and functional designs while touring showrooms, says Doug. The new kitchen incorporates not one but two range-top heating elements: a five-burner Eurostyle gas cooktop and a smaller induction cooktop, which was installed next to it. The gas range features LED burner indicators and is capable of putting out up to 20,000 BTUs, while the 15-inch induction cooktop features glass-touch electronic controls that give it a smooth and easy-to-clean surface. Before The gas range serves as the workhorse, while the induction cooktop offers a convenient warming spot or cooking area for smaller meals. Since the cooktop overlooks the living area rather than being pressed against a wall, a retractable downdraft range hood was installed behind it. The 30-inch double wall oven, also from JennAir, features a 4.3-inch full-color LCD display, multimode convection system and internal temperature probe that allows users to monitor roasting temperatures without having to open the oven door. A 24-inch undercounter drawer design microwave features a stealth flush install, giving it a sleek, out-of-the-way look. Multi-stage programming means heating cycles can utilize up to four power levels as needed, and a sensor reheat feature automatically detects humidity released by food during heating. The 48-inch side-by-side refrigerator offers nearly 30 cubic feet of storage, with a dramatic obsidian interior and multi-point cinematic lighting. A precision temperature management system ensures food is kept at the ideal temperature for preservation while avoiding noisy start and stop cycles. Of course, the kitchen wouldn’t be complete without a dishwasher, and the Grosses stayed with JennAir for that. The model offers a rapid wash cycle, hidden-touch controls and emotive feedback for an intuitive user interface. After Thanks to Doug’s expertise, the space is unrecognizable from its former incarnation. “It’s better than we expected. There is plenty of space for all the dishes, pots and pans and small appliances,” says Roberta. “I enjoy having both gas and induction cooktops.” It was a challenging and time-consuming process, but Doug says he is proud of his work. The Grosses can now make use of the formerly underutilized space, hosting family get-togethers for kids and grandkids, which number 16 when gathered altogether. “There were a few hiccups in the construction, but once I pointed them out to the contractor, he made them right. As the clients are older, I made suggestions for ‘future proofing’ the home to make it safer for aging in place, and they added those work items to the contract,” Doug explains. “As the project drew to a close, the client's budget was stretched thin, so they told the contractor they would do their own 'construction clean', including doing the windows inside and out. It turns out that Ira, in his youth, worked for his father and uncle doing just that in New York City, 20 and 30 stories above the street. This window washing job for him was a piece of cake!” From treading water with an unused pool to swimming in space and style, the Grosses’ remodel is a story of reinvention, proving that the deepest design challenges often lead to the most extraordinary transformations. - Outdoor Kitchens and Built-In Grills: Elevating Your Backyard Experience
Outdoor kitchens and built-in grills have rapidly become a hallmark of modern homes, offering a seamless blend of luxury, functionality and entertainment right in the comfort of your backyard. Whether you’re hosting a family barbecue, an intimate gathering, or a large-scale party, having a well-equipped outdoor kitchen can enhance the experience and provide you with a space that rivals your indoor cooking area. In particular, built-in grills are a central component of these outdoor cooking spaces, offering durability, design flexibility, and top-tier performance. Let’s explore the appeal of outdoor kitchens, the role of built-in grills and how to design an outdoor cooking space that suits your needs. Why Choose an Outdoor Kitchen? An outdoor kitchen offers numerous benefits, turning your backyard into an entertainment hub and extending your living space. Here are some compelling reasons to invest in an outdoor kitchen: Entertainment Hub: With an outdoor kitchen, your backyard becomes an ideal space for socializing. You can cook and entertain simultaneously, allowing guests to mingle around the grill or enjoy the culinary process. Outdoor kitchens are perfect for summer parties, family dinners and holiday gatherings, making it easy to create memorable experiences. Preserve Indoor Comfort: Cooking outdoors means less heat, smoke and lingering cooking smells inside your home. This is especially appealing during warmer months when you want to keep the indoor temperature cooler. You can cook without worrying about overheating the kitchen or making the house smell like grilled food. Increase Home Value: A well-designed outdoor kitchen can significantly increase your home’s resale value. Many buyers view a fully equipped outdoor kitchen as a major selling point, particularly in areas with warm climates where outdoor living is a year-round option. Improved Cooking Space: Having a dedicated space for outdoor cooking means you can free up room inside your home. It’s also an opportunity to experiment with cooking techniques, from grilling and smoking to baking and even pizza making, in a space designed for convenience. The Built-In Grill: The Heart of the Outdoor Kitchen A built-in grill is typically the centerpiece of an outdoor kitchen. Unlike portable grills that can be moved around, built-in grills are permanently installed into your kitchen’s structure, creating a sleek, professional look and offering superior cooking performance. Here’s why built-in grills are so popular: Durability: Built-in grills are designed to withstand the elements, offering longevity and performance throughout the year. Made with high-quality stainless steel or other durable materials, these grills can handle the wear and tear of outdoor cooking. They are often designed to be weather-resistant, preventing rust and damage from exposure to rain, sun and other elements. Enhanced Cooking Performance: Built-in grills are often more powerful than portable grills, offering larger cooking surfaces and advanced features. With higher BTU (British Thermal Unit) ratings, they can produce more heat, equaling faster cooking times and better searing. Many built-in models feature multiple burners, side burners for accessories, rotisseries and infrared technology, providing you with a wide range of cooking options. Customization: One of the key benefits of built-in grills is their ability to be customized. Depending on the design of your outdoor kitchen, you can choose from various sizes, configurations and features to fit your cooking style. Whether you prefer a gas or charcoal grill, an integrated smoker or a combination of cooking appliances, built-in grills can be tailored to your exact specifications. Seamless Integration: Built-in grills are designed to be integrated into the overall structure of your outdoor kitchen. They are often installed into stone, brick or custom cabinetry, which creates a cohesive look. This integration allows the grill to flow organically with other kitchen elements, such as countertops, storage spaces and sinks, giving your outdoor area a professional and polished appearance. Designing Your Outdoor Kitchen Designing an outdoor kitchen involves several important considerations. Here are some tips to help you create a functional, stylish and comfortable cooking space: Layout and Flow: The footprint of your outdoor kitchen should focus on convenience and functionality. Just like an indoor kitchen, you’ll want to plan for a work triangle; the optimal layout that places your sink, grill and refrigerator (or cooler) in a convenient arrangement. This ensures a smooth flow of cooking, prepping and serving. Grill Location: When deciding where to install your built-in grill, consider factors such as wind direction, the proximity to seating areas and ease of access to utilities like gas lines or electricity. It’s also important to have proper ventilation for the grill to ensure safety and comfort. Material Selection: The materials you choose for your outdoor kitchen should be durable and weather-resistant. Stainless steel is a popular choice for the grill itself, as it’s corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. For cabinetry and countertops, consider materials like granite, stone or concrete that can withstand outdoor conditions. Maximizing Space: Even if your outdoor kitchen area is limited in size, you can maximize the available space with thoughtful design. Opt for compact yet efficient cabinetry, corner units and multi-purpose elements, such as a countertop that doubles as a dining area. Built-in shelving and cabinets can provide storage for utensils, spices and grilling tools, helping you stay organized. Entertainment Features: Adding extra features, such as an outdoor refrigerator, built-in seating, or even a bar area, can elevate your outdoor kitchen to a full-fledged entertainment space. A fire pit or pizza oven could also complement your kitchen, offering additional cooking and socializing options. Lighting: Proper lighting is essential in an outdoor kitchen, especially if you plan to use the space in the evening. Ensure that the cooking area is well-lit with task lighting above the grill and prep surfaces. Ambient lighting around the seating area will help create a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Weather Protection: Outdoor kitchens are designed to withstand the elements, but they still benefit from a bit of shelter. A pergola, awning or built-in roof structure can shield the cooking area from rain and provide shade during the hot summer months. Invest in covers for your grill and other appliances to keep them safe when not in use. Additional Features to Enhance Your Outdoor Kitchen Side Burners: Ideal for boiling water or cooking sauces while grilling, side burners make your outdoor kitchen more versatile. Smokers: For those who love slow-cooked flavors, adding a smoker to your outdoor kitchen can take your grilling to the next level. Ice Makers and Refrigerators: Having a dedicated fridge or ice maker outdoors ensures you always have cold beverages and ingredients on hand. Pizza Ovens: Outdoor pizza ovens are gaining popularity for those who love fresh, wood-fired pizza, making them a perfect addition to your kitchen. An outdoor kitchen equipped with a built-in grill offers the perfect balance of convenience, performance and style, transforming your backyard into a hub for cooking and entertaining. Whether you’re a casual griller or a seasoned BBQ enthusiast, a built-in grill provides superior cooking capabilities that make outdoor meals faster, more flavorful, and more enjoyable. By designing an outdoor kitchen that suits your space and lifestyle, you can create an inviting, functional area that enhances your home and outdoor living experience.
- The Art of Kitchen Aesthetics
How to choose a design style that feels timeless, functional and uniquely you. Whether you’re planning a full renovation or updating a few elements, choosing the right aesthetic can help you create a space that feels cohesive, welcoming and uniquely yours. Here’s how to find the right look for your kitchen: 1. Start with Your Home’s Architecture Your kitchen doesn’t need to match every other room exactly, but it should complement the overall structure and era of your home. A sleek, ultra-modern kitchen might feel out of place in a historic craftsman, just as a farmhouse-style kitchen might not blend well in a minimalist loft. Let your home’s bones guide your design direction. 2. Define Your Style Think about the spaces you’re drawn to. Do you love cozy and rustic interiors? Clean and contemporary lines? Vibrant, eclectic touches? Browse Pinterest, design magazines or even appliance showrooms to gather inspiration. Save images that speak to you, even if they don’t seem to match at first. Patterns may emerge. 3. Select Core Materials Materials like wood, stone, metal and tile can dramatically change the ambiance of your kitchen. For example: • Marble or quartz countertops often signal elegance or modern luxury. • Butcher block surfaces lean rustic or Scandinavian. • Matte black hardware works well in modern or industrial kitchens. • Shaker-style cabinets are versatile, equally at home in farmhouse or transitional kitchens. Pick materials that not only match your desired look but also fit your lifestyle and maintenance preferences. 4. Let Appliances Support Your Style Appliances are often the centerpiece of a kitchen. Stainless steel is a classic choice for modern and transitional designs. White or matte black appliances can feel more farmhouse or minimalist. Panel-ready appliances can create a seamless look in contemporary or high-end traditional kitchens. Some brands even offer colorful appliances for bold or retro-inspired spaces. 5. Don’t Forget the Lighting Lighting has the power to transform your kitchen. Pendant lights over the island, under-cabinet lighting, or statement chandeliers can elevate your design and reinforce the aesthetic. Choose finishes that coordinate with your hardware and fixtures for a cohesive effect. 6. Choose a Color Palette Color plays a huge role in setting the mood. Cool tones, such as gray, white and navy, tend to evoke a modern and crisp feel. Warm neutrals and earth tones can feel rustic or traditional. Bold hues like matte black or deep green are increasingly popular in both transitional and contemporary spaces. Once you settle on a palette, stick to it across cabinets, walls, appliances and décor for a unified look. 7. Think About Layout and Function Your design should be as functional as it is beautiful. If you love the look of open shelving but cook daily and need ample storage, consider incorporating both closed cabinets and a few open shelves for display. If you’re drawn to large islands and communal spaces, consider how your layout can support entertaining or family meals. 8. Mix (But Don’t Muddle) Styles Today’s kitchen designs often blend aesthetics; for example, modern farmhouse or industrial chic. You don’t have to stick to one style rigidly. But try to balance your mix. A good rule of thumb: stick to one dominant style and one or two accent styles. Keep finishes and colors consistent to tie it all together. 9. Consider Timelessness While it’s fun to embrace trends, ask yourself if you’ll still love your design in 5 or 10 years. Classic elements, like neutral cabinets, natural stone, or subway tile, can form a timeless base that allows for trendier accents to be swapped in over time. 10. Consult a Pro (or Visit a Showroom) Still unsure what aesthetic is right for you? Interior designers or kitchen consultants can help you narrow your vision and create a mood board or mockup. Visiting an appliance or cabinetry showroom can also help you visualize your style in real-life settings. Choosing a kitchen aesthetic is about more than looks; it’s about creating a space that reflects how you live, cook and connect. By taking time to understand your preferences and priorities, you’ll curate a space that not only looks amazing but works beautifully for your everyday life. Aesthetics
