Remodeling a living space is a big undertaking, even under the best circumstances. Plans rarely unfold perfectly; there are often delays, permit hurdles or supply challenges that most homeowners come to expect. For Jill and Lucas Ketzer, however, their remodeling journey began during an especially tender time: the unexpected loss of Jill’s father.

On the state’s western slope, in the outskirts of Grand Junction, Stone Cliff Views offers exactly this. The 5,000-square-foot custom-built luxury home is a hop and a skip from the iconic Colorado River, and the red rock cliffs of Colorado National Monument tower above. The location alone is enough to inspire awe, with expansive vistas and easy access to the often-overlooked national monument, but the home is a wonder unto itself.

For the inexperienced, remodeling a home can be an almost impossibly daunting task. Coming up with a plan, choosing the right designers and contractors, selecting features, materials, and appliances, all while managing a budget that can get out of control quickly and navigating the myriad unforeseen issues that are sure to arise. To say the least, a major remodel is a lot.

What’s the difference between a house and a home? A house is a simple noun, a place, a structure. But a home is harder to define, tied more to a feeling. A home is a place of spirit and soul, a vessel for the human expression of those who live within it. A house is empty and indifferent — but a home contains life.

What does a fresh start look like? Tabula rasa; the blank slate, onto which hopes, ambition and intent can be inscribed, creating a life as close to the idealized as possible. It is that feeling of optimism that homeowners John and Colleen Martin have captured in the kitchen of their recently constructed home in Fruita, Colorado.

December 30th, 2021, Louisville endured one of the biggest tragedies the state of Colorado has ever seen, the Marshall Fires. A wind-driven fire broke out and spread quickly, burning down over 1,000 homes and forcing families to evacuate the area.
